About KMEA

Preamble
Music is an integral, vibrant part of life. The lifelong process of learning, performing, creating, and appreciating music brings meaning and richness to our heritage and culture. The Kansas Music Educators Association is an organization of music educators committed to the concept that the study of music is a positive influence in the lives of individuals and society as a whole.

Mission Statement
The mission of the Kansas Music Educators Association is to support music educators by fostering leadership, providing professional development, and promoting the advocacy of music learning in schools and communities.

KMEA will provide leadership in:

  • Recruiting, retaining, and mentoring of music educators
  • Encouraging the professional growth and development of music educators
  • Improving the quality of music education in Kansas
  • Responding to the changes that technology brings to music education
  • Strengthening performance ensembles

To achieve this mission, KMEA will continue to strengthen its organization through a teamwork
approach that reaches out to individuals and groups within communities.

National Standards for Music Education

To assist music educators in Kansas, the clinics and performances at the KMEA In-Service Workshop (ISW) will be listed with applicable music content standards.
The following is a list of the State of Kansas and the NAfME National Music Content Standards.

Creating – Conceiving and developing new artistic ideas and work

C1 – Imagine – Generate musical ideas for various purposes and contexts.
C2 – Plan and Make – Select and develop musical ideas for defined purposes and contexts.
C3 – Evaluate and Refine – Evaluate and refine selected musical ideas to create musical work that meets appropriate criteria.
C4 – Present – Share creative musical work that conveys intent, demonstrates craftsmanship, and exhibits originality.

Performing – Realizing artistic ideas and work through interpretation and presentation

P1 – Select – Select varied musical work to present based on interest, knowledge, technical skill, and context.
P2 – Analyze – Analyze the structure and context of varied musical works and their implication for performance.
P3 – Interpret – Develop personal interpretations that consider creators’ intent.
P4 – Rehearse, Evaluate, and Refine – Evaluate and refine personal and ensemble performances, individually or in collaboration with others.
P5 – Present – Perform expressively, with appropriate interpretation and technical accuracy, and in a manner appropriate to the audience and context.

Responding – Understanding and evaluating how the arts convey meaning

R1 – Select – Choose music appropriate for a specific purpose or context.
R2 – Analyze – Analyze how the structure and context of varied musical works inform the response.
R3 – Interpret – Support interpretations of musical works that reflect creators’/performers’ expressive intent.
R4 – Evaluate – Support evaluations of musical work and performances based on analysis, interpretation, and established criteria.
