Dr. Donald Corbett, a prominent leader in music education, passed away on Thursday, September 2. Dr. Corbett built successful band programs at several Kansas schools followed by an exceptional career as Professor of Music Education at Wichita State University. Among his many accolades, Dr. Corbett was named a Lowell Mason Fellow, the highest national honor for Music Educators. He served as KMEA President (1971-1973) and President of MENC (now NAfME – 1986-1988). He then became the second Executive Director of KMEA from 1992-2002. Dr. Corbett has many former students teaching music across the United States.
MEMORIAL: In memory of Dr. Donald Corbett, the family has requested that donations be made to the KMEA Fund. Interest from the Fund is used to pay for KMEA scholarships, including the Don and JoAnne Corbett Scholarship. This scholarship is awarded to a college senior in Kansas majoring in Music Education. Interest from this Fund is also used to award CODA grants to Kansas music educators to increase opportunities for learning in music classrooms.
